Details: The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) is a Phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2 x 2 factorial study evaluating selenium and vitamin E. The primary objective of the study is to assess the effect of these agents alone and in combination on the clinical incidence of prostate cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) in conjunction with the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and intergroup partners developed the trial. The goal of SELECT is to recruit and randomize 32,400 healthy men aged 55 or older (50 or older for African American men). Men will be randomized over a five-year period and will be required to take two capsules of Study Supplements daily for seven to twelve years. In addition, a participant can choose to receive free multivitamins that are specially formulated for SELECT. Study activities will be performed at over 400 Study Sites in the United States and Canada, under the direction of the Southwest Oncology Group Operations Office in San Antonio, Texas and the Southwest Oncology Group Statistical Center in Seattle, Washington. The Study Centers were chosen based on their ability to recruit and randomize individuals meeting the eligibility criteria for this trial and to comply with the defined quality control and data collection procedures. Communication between the SELECT Study Sites and the Southwest Oncology Group Operations Office and Statistical Center will primarily be through the Internet and e-mail. The functions that will depend on the Internet include the randomization of participants, Study Supplement supply, data submission, and access to the SELECT Protocol and the Study Manual (including forms) as well as recruitment and training materials.
