Synopsis: The purpose of this study is to determine whether the effects of massage on cancer-related pain are promising enough to warrant a larger clinical trial.
Details: Massage therapies are increasingly used in cancer care to alleviate problems such as stress and anxiety. Recent evidence suggests that these therapies may also help reduce pain. This study will test the ability of massage to reduce pain in cancer patients. Participants in this study will be randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments: daily sessions of light touch massage, visits with a volunteer, or periods of quiet time. Participants will complete questionnaires about pain, anxiety and depression levels, and pain medication use. The questionnaires will be completed several times throughout the 6-day study.
