Synopsis: The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness and safety of risperidone versus placebo in patients that have been diagnosed with psychosis of Alzheimer's Disease

Study Type: Interventional, Treatment
Minimum Age/Maximum Age: 55 Years/
Genders: Both
Protocol Entry Criteria: - Subjects have a diagnosis of dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DSM-IV 290.xx) with or without a vascular component, provided the vascular component is not the primary source of dementia. - Subjects have a diagnosis of psychosis of AD as defined by the modified diagnostic criteria from Jeste & Finkel (see Addendum 1). - Subjects have a BEHAVE-AD psychotic score of >2 on any item in the psychotic cluster at screening. - Subjects have a score ranging from 5 to 23 on the MMSE. - All subjects enrolled would be deemed to be in need of treatment with an atypical antipsychotic. - Prior to screening, subjects must have resided in a unit of a nursing home or other long-term care facility for at least two weeks and will remain institutionalized in the same unit for at least the next 9 weeks. - Subjects should be ambulatory, walk with assistance or be able to use a wheelchair independently.
